TEDのようにプレゼンターが登壇して語るイベントですが、人生にインパクトを残したパーソナルな体験を語る、というストーリーテリングイベントです。プレゼンターはプロのコメディアン、ライターからその場でくじ引きで選ばれた庶民まで。
イギリス海峡をバスタブで横断する冒険譚から、少年時代の甘酸っぱい思い出話まで、光に寄せられる蛾(moth)のように、あなたもめくるめくストーリーに魅せられる事でしょう。イベントはアメリカの他、イギリス、オーストラリアでも開催されており、多様な英語に触れられるのも魅力です。
Prom
このエピソードは、アメリカの高校で開かれるダンスパーティー・プロム(Prom)を巡り、人種の壁にぶちあたるインド系アメリカ人の物語。オリジナルのプレゼンテーションは下記サイトから視聴できます。
あらすじ
カリフォルニア州デイヴィスに住むインド系アメリカ人の高校生Hasan Minhajは、転校生の白人少女・Bethanyと仲良くなる。放課後お互いの家で勉強を教え合ううちに二人はやがて恋に落ちる。高校生活最大のイベント・プロム(prom)にも二人で行く約束をし、当日、厳格な父の目を盗んでHasanはBethanyの家へ向かうが…
聞きどころ
Hasanはプロのコメディアンだけあって、話が抜群に面白く、思わず引き込まれる。抑揚の付け方、間の取り方、言葉の選び方、どれを取っても超一流。
物語には、男子高校生の胸の高まりが色鮮やかに描かれている。プロムというアメリカ特有のイベントを通じて、アメリカ社会に根深い人種問題が浮き彫りになるが、最後に語られるHasanの父親の言葉が何よりも深い。

Promとは：主にアメリカとカナダの高校で行われるダンスパーティの事で、高校生活で極めて重要なイベント。男女ペアでの参加が基本で、誰を誘うか、どんな衣装を着るか、当日に向けて大きな関心事となる。

Poppins’ Coffin

あらすじ
メイン州ポートランドに住むタイ系アメリカ人Jaed Coffinは、5歳の娘にせがまれ黒い仔猫を飼う。Poppinsと名付けられた仔猫は、木に登っては降りられなくなる世話の焼ける猫だった。JaedはそんなPoppinsに振り回されるが、やがて愛情が芽生える。ある日Poppinsが木から落ちて…
聞きどころ
Jaedの張りのある英語は聴いていて気持ちが良い。英語表現が若々しく、正に活きた英語を学ぶのに格好のプレゼンテーション。特別ネコ好きでも無かったJaedと、面倒を見る事になった仔猫Poppinsの対話が素晴らしい。

意味：あとに残されたお父さんたちが僕の事を苦々しく思った。
